“Running Elephant ” – Pompeian Bronze- circa early 1920s. Bronze clad. Modeled after an 1875 French sculpture by Antoine Louis Barye called “Elephant du Senegal”. Measues 6” high x 7-1/4” long x 4” wide. Weighs 6-1/2 lbs. the pair. Barye, a French Animalier, had a way of brilliantly capturing motion. The tusks are tightly fitted ivory. These are quite old, extremely rare, and not listed in any of the reference books. They have no shopmarks on them but do show up in an early Pompeian Bronze catalog as #135 – Running Elephant. I suspect they were made by P.Mori and Son and inherited by Pompeian. Gorgeous dark bronze patina. Felt is on bottom of both. Age appropriate wear with few minor cracks in bronze cladding that do not affect structure or visual appearance. These handsome beasts are in otherwise beautiful condition.
