Kathodion Bronze Works

Circa 1914

“Hercules ”

Price:  $1250.

“Hercules”  – Kathodion Bronze Works Circa 1914.  Bronze-clad.  Measures 8-1/2” high x 5-1/4” wide x 4” deep.  Weighs 3-1/2 lbs.  Single bookend or statuette.  Inscribed on back  ARTBRONZ, KBW.  Appears in old KBW catalog as “Hercules #541-- A figure modeled with the full sense of the great proportions and bodily vigor and strength of this historic strong man.”  The weary Hercules, with dramatically exaggerated musculature, is posed with his signature club and lion skin that give visual clues to the Greek myth’s identity. The narrative scene on the reverse side shows Hercules strangling the demonic “Nemean Lion.”  Condition issues: Few minor manufacturing dings and repair to small amount of copper delamination on rear bottom edge.  Bottom felt replaced. Still displays beautifully for its age. One of the rarest, century old KBW pieces.
